Santa Catarina Palopo Woman's Huipil --- Monochromatic orange and tangarine butterflies, peacocks, queztals, roosters, tree of life, deer and other design patterns brocaded on a contrasting black base. It's a very striking new style. Girls and younger women in Santa Catarina Palopo started weaving and wearing this new style of huipil five to ten years ago.. The huipil has 3 panels and is woven on a backstrap loom. Like most Santa Catarina Palopo huipils the thread is a synthetic. The armholes are nicely finished with an unusual brocade or crocheted stitch.
Purchased from Manuela Cumez Tac in 2016. She told me her daughter, Ana wove it for herself and was selling it to help her pay for her schooling.
Condition: Good used condition. The huipil shows light wear and a few loose threads. Sides seams are sewn closed (could be easily opened). The bottom of the panels have short fringe. As with many Santa Catarina Palopo huipils, there is some uneveness to the length of the panels. It could be hemmed to a even length, if desired.
