The Mendez Family left Guatemala for the United States in the 1980s when the Guatemalan civil war came to their family home in San Miguel Acatan. They became refuges, threatened by both the guerrillas and the military. Karen Mendez, was the first of her family to be born in the US, and is now about 10. You learn the story of her parents, and their Mayan life in Guatemala as she learns it and as your learn about how as refuges they mange to maintain some of the traditions while living in southern Florida.
